Travel Deeper: Why Travelling is Worth the Investment

The picturesque view was unbelievable. The snow-covered mountains, reflected on the crystalline water, made a smartphone picture look like a work of art. Thousands of multi-colored residences and luxurious yachts surrounded the thirty-mile long lake, adding a unique touch to the already impressive scenario. I stopped the car by a Renaissance building just to admire this scene for hours.

While enjoying some local wine I came to understand why travelling is worth the investment. We must travel to free ourselves from the paradigms imposed by our society, and to understand other cultures and appreciate their differences.

This epiphany was even clearer to me the next day, when I headed to Bellagio, a boutique village with a splendid coastline. This charming berth has two main streets that are encircled by adorable pizzerias and gelaterias. Additionally, La Punta, a public shoreline is the perfect place to relax and if you are brave enough, throw yourself into the cold water. It was there after I admired the astounding setting that I decided to write an article persuading all the travel skeptics that no other investment will supply the considerable amount of knowledge that a trip grants.

We must travel to free ourselves from the paradigms imposed by our society, and to understand other cultures and appreciate their differences.

As suggested by Terry Pratchett, “Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” When you depart on an adventure, any kind of journey, it does not matter how much time or how long you go…you’ll always return appeased by how richer you’ve become since you’ve gone.

You’ll forever reminisce about the places you’ve visited. I can still perfectly reconstruct the image my eyes witnessed that day in Lake Como, where the paradoxical view of the snowy mountains contrasted with the sultry weather. It is this kind of once-in-a-lifetime experience that will ultimately make you a culturally wealthier person.

When you travel you educate yourself simultaneously. As you embrace other cultures and taste the life in other countries, you will find that travelling is a pathway to multiple doors, an exit to a series of destinations that are each characteristic in its own way. Being a foreigner is not about feeling distant from your native place of birth, but about feeling close to the initial desire that took you to that given location: your desire to travel around the world and to escape any societal restraint.

Beautiful words and photos Isabella, come and visit us (Australians) in Thailand some time. With regards to your last sentence, I totally agree about escaping societal restraint, even from the wonderful Australia. But there are just so many rewards in leaving and the escape is no longer the focus but the amazing joy and sadness of having ones eyes becoming wide open to both the beauty and the misery of the world outside our home country.
