Why I Love The DivaCup: A Conversation with Katherine Parker

Tell us about yourself. What do you do when you’re not traveling the world?

I work in health-related community development and WASH in Nepal.

Why did you first start using The DivaCup?

In 2006 while living in Iowa, I was inspired by a roommate who used it. I had previously used washable pads and OB tampons (without applicators) and disposable menstrual cups. I did a lot of backpacking and travel at the time and was frustrated by the need to carry out used tampons when I was backpacking and the uncertainty of what and how much to pack while traveling.

How do you benefit from using The DivaCup on your travels?

It is so easy to pack for trips now. I have a spare DivaCup that lives in my perpetually semi-packed suitcase, so it is always there when I need it, even it my period starts early. I travel to a lot of rough places with minimal or no sanitation infrastructure; I’ve had lots of bus rides through rural parts of less developed nations. I am comfortable and confident to do this at any time of the month and for weeks on end knowing that I can manage my menstruation wherever I am thanks to The DivaCup. My field is dominated by men in part because it is easier for them to travel. I don’t face those barriers.

Tell us about a time when you were traveling and wished you had The DivaCup?

I can’t remember a time in the last five years when I have been without it.

What’s next on your travel list?

Next week I’ll be traveling down to the lowlands of Nepal.
