Authenticity is essential to good writing. You don’t need a fancy qualification in order to write well, or a high-status job. You just need two things: a unique mind, and the ability to develop your own voice. In other words, you need to be authentic. But where do you start? Here are some suggestions.

Wander your hometown

Travel writers are constantly seeking new experiences. The world is our classroom and we’re always open to learning more. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to be constantly traveling to new places. Instead, try wandering your own neighborhood.

Take the time to notice all the little things you never paid attention to before. See what catches your eye and what invites you to examine a new perspective. There’s so much waiting to be explored. Take a moment to stop and notice it.

Carry a journal with you

Maybe you’ve always been a writer. Maybe you never thought you could be. Either way, try carrying a notebook around with you one day. Jot down what goes through your head. What grabs your interest? Include sketches if you like, or lists. There’s no correct format for your thoughts.

People watch

Sit at your local park and take in what surrounds you. If you’re in a big city, you can have even more fun with this. Find a bench (anywhere, doesn’t have to be in a park) and just watch the world go by. Notice what grabs you.

Flee your comfort zone.

Travel every chance you get

Even if you’ve never traveled before, take the risk. Flee your comfort zone. Not only will you discover more about the world around you, you’ll gain a better understanding of who you are. Our writing expands as we do.

Pour yourself out onto paper

We all get lost in our own thoughts sometimes, but we don’t always know how we feel until we let it out. This is where writing comes in. Don’t hold back when you write. Dive into who you are and sprawl it over each new page. Let your pen think for you.

Never judge or pressure yourself when you have trouble writing

Inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places. So wander — mentally and physically — as much as you can. Set out to open your mind and constantly explore different points of view. Let curiosity be your tour guide.

Think about what you want to do with your writing

It’s up to you whether you’d like to share your writing or just keep it for yourself. Just never accept  notions of “right” or “wrong” when it comes to your own creativity. Recognize that as long as you think, you can write too.

Writers have different motivations and justifications for what they do. Some people write to vent. Others write to inspire or to give advice. You just need to find your own purpose. Some people, like myself, may always be in search of the next big trip, the next learning experience, the next thrill. However, writing is an adventure of its own, so enjoy the ride.

When not exploring or writing, she’s more than likely namasteing it out at yoga or doing some ridiculous task to make a stranger smile.
